Carmel & Big Sur Elopements | A Wildly Beautiful Place to Say Your Vows

Some places don’t need much explaining. You arrive, step out of the car, hear the waves crashing below, and suddenly everything else feels quieter.

That’s Big Sur.

Just a short drive south of Carmel-by-the-Sea, this stretch of California coastline is one of the most breathtaking places to elope. Rugged cliffs rise above the Pacific Ocean, sea mist rolls in from the water, wildflowers bloom along the trails in spring, and giant rocks stand just offshore, surrounded by endless blue. It feels untamed in the most beautiful way.

One of my favorite locations for an elopement is Garrapata State Park. The trails wind along dramatic coastal cliffs before leading down to the beach, giving you so many different landscapes within a short walk. One moment you’re standing above the ocean with panoramic views stretching for miles, and the next you’re wandering through the sand with waves washing around the rocks.

If you’ve always imagined exchanging private vows somewhere that feels peaceful and completely immersed in nature, the cliffs overlooking the Pacific are unforgettable. Standing together with nothing but the sound of the ocean below and the breeze coming off the water creates a ceremony that feels deeply personal. There’s no audience, no distractions—just the two of you promising forever in one of the most beautiful places in California.

One of the things I love most about Big Sur is that no two days ever look the same.

Some mornings are wrapped in a soft marine fog that drifts between the cliffs, creating the dreamiest, most cinematic atmosphere. Other evenings the fog slowly lifts, revealing golden light spilling across the coastline just before sunset. And sometimes you get both in the same day—the misty romance of the morning followed by glowing sunsets over the ocean. The changing weather is part of what makes this coastline feel so magical.

Spring is especially beautiful here. The hillsides turn vibrant green, colorful wildflowers line the trails, and the coastline feels alive after the winter rains. Every corner seems to reveal another incredible view, making the drive itself part of the experience.
